Joint Pain and its Causes

Millions of people from all ages suffer from joint pain. In the United States alone, one in three adults have some form of joint pain. Many people suffer in silence, believing that these aches and pains are a normal condition. Others deal with their pain with over-the-counter medications, not realizing that their joint pain is caused by arthritis or some other chronic condition that is often treatable with prescription medication and lifestyle changes. Millions of people could live a pain-free life if only they knew the facts about joint pain, its causes, and remedies.
Causes of joint pain
One of the main causes of joint pain is arthritis, an inflammation of the joints. This occurs when cartilage (the shock absorbers between bones) breaks down and the bones rub together. This causes friction that results in swelling, stiffness and pain. Other causes of joint pain are diseases, infections, sprains, cancer, broken bones and general wear due to age. It is critical to seek treatment from a physician for any persistent joint pain: it may be a symptom of a serious and possibly life-threatening disease or condition.
Treatments for joint pain
Depending on the cause, treatments include medication, physical therapy, joint fluid supplements and, in extreme cases, joint replacement. Non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs) are commonly used to treat arthritis. Corticosteroid injections are also effective, but can have damaging side effects if used long term. Isometric exercises and walking often help. Joint fluid supplements can help alleviate the friction of bones rubbing together. Joint replacement is sometimes required for those with extreme conditions.
Joint pain is no longer an ordeal that people have to endure. Seeking medical care is the first, most important step to living a pain-free life. There are many available treatments and medications to minimize or even completely remove joint pain.
